We refer to this wine as the “chameleon,” as it evolves and morphs in each glass. The combination of climate, soil, and rare clones planted at UV-SL produce kaleidoscopic, site-driven nuances.
Mark Aubert’s Tasting Notes
The 2023 UV-SL Chardonnay is vibrant and inviting, perfectly encapsulating the dual longevity and instant appeal of this special vintage. The wine unfolds in a complex blend of fleshy apricot and mixed peel, warm layers of white pepper and sarsaparilla, honeyed florals, and sun-soaked slate. The palate is racy and energetic yet possesses undeniable complexity and generosity that promise longevity for the coming 10 to 15 years. The wine is slightly hazy showing our commitment to minimal intervention winemaking.
Our most masculine Pinot Noir, the UV-SL, is opulent in color, reflecting a tangible fullness across the palate. The vineyard’s proximity to the ocean is deceptive, as the notably warm climate allows the grapes to reach our optimal ripeness.
Mark Aubert’s Tasting Notes
The 2022 UV-SL Pinot Noir is intense and mineral, with potent aromas of wild blueberry, ube plum, graphite, and turned earth. Both dynamic and beguilingly complex, the wine continues to develop in waves of blood orange, briar, and tobacco. Wafts of sweet chapparal begin to emerge, indicative of the inimitable features of the wild, coastal terroir neighboring the vineyard. The wine is driving and precise across the palate, with a firm backbone of tannin and lingering acidity that lend the wine its distinct focus and grace for a long future in the cellar.
